"Our brand feels old" is the most common reason a rebrand conversation starts, and it is often the wrong question. A logo can feel dated for two very different reasons, and they call for two very different responses.
- Has the business actually changed: new products, a different customer, a different market, or does it just feel that way this week?
- Is the identity inconsistent across touchpoints, or is it consistent but simply dated in style?
- Would the team describe the brand’s personality the same way, unprompted? If five people give five different answers, the problem is not visual.
- Can the current identity flex into a new application: packaging, a new product line, a new market, or does every new use require a workaround?
Two different diagnoses
If the answers point to inconsistency and drift, the fix is usually a system: tighter rules, applied consistently, not a new identity. If the answers point to a business that has genuinely outgrown what the identity says about it, a refresh will not hold. That is the one case where starting over, strategy first, is the honest answer.
